Let’s view the world through the eyes of an artist.
We are delighted to bring you the art and world view of this year’s Solo Traveler Artist in Residence, Marie Pottiez, a visual artist and traveler. On her blog, Miles of Happiness, Marie illustrates her journeys, inspiring people to travel beyond their comfort zone. Seems like a good fit to us. Here is Marie’s perspective, sharing her travel experience and a series of images of Indonesia. Marie’s illustrations are also available for purchase on her blog.
I get my luggage and head for the exit. The doors open. Around twenty taxi drivers head straight to me screaming, “taxi, taxi!”
“Where are you going?”
It’s all going too fast, too noisy. I just woke up after a 12-hour flight. I am lost and tired. Oh, joy–I see my boyfriend waving at me on the side! He’s been here in Jakarta for over three months already, he seems serene and far less panicked than I am. It’s my first time in Asia. We jump in a taxi, he sees my scared face, and says the thing that will change it instantly to a happy smile: “We’re going to Bali tomorrow.”
The next day, we are driving a scooter along the bay of the Island of Gods. On the road, we come across smiling kids, herds of buffalo, lost hens, rice terraces. This is so incredible! I look at life through a child’s eyes, amazed by everything.
The Balinese have a natural inherent talent to make everything pretty–it’s like they are devoted to beauty. It can be an origami masterpiece in a chic hotel room or a food arrangement in the cheapest street food restaurant: everything is made to perfection. All together, it creates a refined and inspiring place to explore. The nature and the culture complete the picture with perfect colorful sunsets on the sea, exotic jungle, mini temples smoking in every corner and huge palm trees. It’s no mystery why Bali possesses this reputation.
I will spend a year around Indonesia, seeking balance between the craziness and the traffic of Jakarta and the serenity and silence of the remote islands. From Sulawesi to Java, Indonesia is vast and rich, and will inspire me in many, many ways.
