Let’s view the world through the eyes of an artist.
We are delighted to bring you the art and world view of this year’s Solo Traveler Artist in Residence, Marie Pottiez, a visual artist and traveler. On her blog, Miles of Happiness, Marie illustrates her journeys, inspiring people to travel beyond their comfort zone. Seems like a good fit to us. Here is Marie’s perspective, sharing her travel experience and a series of images of London. Marie’s illustrations are also available for purchase on her blog.

It took me 20 years to visit this city, and only a couple of hours to fall in love with it. London isn’t a place you want to travel to, it’s a place you want to live in. I don’t know where it comes from, but there is this charming atmosphere that makes me feel home: the dim light in the pubs, the vintage markets in Portobello, the British fashion, that melancholic weather, the lovely parks, that adorable accent…

I went there as a tourist and did all the ‘musts’ for a first-timer in London. I hurried onto the hop on-hop off bus to get the best seat on the top deck, saw a show in the West End, changed my ideas about British food with a Sunday roast, waited for hours to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, tried to spot Hugh Grant’s legendary blue door in Notting Hill, spent too much money at Harrods, fed squirrels in the park, wandered in Camden town, visited Westminster Abbey, took a photo in a red phone box, crossed the Tower Bridge–and believe it or not, it wasn’t enough to assuage my thirst to discover London. It’s simple: I can never get enough of London. So I keep coming back again and again, as often as I can, to immerse myself in its unique vibe.

London is my definition of an elegant European city–although it might depend on which district you are in, and at what time, I have to admit. Its architecture, its parks, and its culture make it an inspiring place. Maybe the fact that I’ve been living in Asia for over three years makes me say that. I know my opinion is absolutely not unbiased. But you won’t contradict me if I say London is a fantastic city, will you?
