Let’s view the world through the eyes of an artist.
We are delighted to bring you the art and world view of this year’s Solo Traveler Artist in Residence, Marie Pottiez, a visual artist and traveler. On her blog, Miles of Happiness, Marie illustrates her journeys, inspiring people to travel beyond their comfort zone. Seems like a good fit to us. Here is Marie’s perspective, sharing her travel experience and a series of images of Nepal. Marie’s illustrations are also available for purchase on her blog.
Some places seem to be so different from home, that in some ways, it’s difficult to believe they really exist. I’ve always been intrigued by Nepal – the Himalayas, of course, but also the incredible city of Kathmandu. On the flight there, I have many questions in my head. I’m so impatient, I can’t wait to get there and see it with my own eyes. We finally land, at a tiny, messy airport which is… yes, the biggest of the country. Our first sight of Kathmandu will be by night, with empty streets and scary stray dogs. The next morning, I am awake at 6:30 am. I can’t sleep anymore. I just have to see how it is outside. I take the stairs to the rooftop of the hotel, to get a sneak peek of the city. It looks pretty quiet from here. I can see the mountains in the distance. It’s stunning.
What an opportunity to be on the streets when the city is still asleep. Tuktuks and bikes are stopped by the sidewalks, locals start to open their shops, set up their stalls. Then in what appears to me as only a few minutes, the city is wide awake, rushed, and very busy. It’s thrilling. I’m in the middle of this mess, and I don’t know anymore where to go, or where to look. There is so much happening: the noise of the merchants screaming, the horns, the bikes, the music in the stores, the smell of the street food, the clouds of sand, the fantastic bright colors everywhere. All my senses are in action. It’s as if I had been living in slow motion all this time, and finally returned to the true pace of life. I want to remember this sensation. I know this is something I won’t forget.
