I traveled solo to Corfu for a vacation while waiting to embark on a Greek tour with GoAhead Tours. I had been in Italy for five weeks prior to this. I bought a ticket to Corfu to see where the Durrells lived.
(For those who don't know, The Durrells in Corfu is a television series based loosely on the memoirs of British naturalist, author, conservationist, and zookeeper, Gerald Durrell. He wrote a trilogy, including My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods about his childhood years spent on the Greek island of Corfu.)
Corfu is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands. The largest of these islands, Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxi (or Paxos) and Kythira, are located in the Ionian Sea on the western side of Greece.
The food was great, including fresh fish and gyro sandwiches. I had rented a great B&B, so many meals were cooked by me.
I rented a car and took short trips to explore the area in the morning, then spent the afternoons in the sea.
The community was very close knit, and they welcomed me like family! The owners of the B&B dropped fresh baked bread at my patio every day.
My evenings were spent in local restaurants with views of the beach, filled with local people.
I had the most wonderful time.
One thing to note if you are planning to travel solo to Corfu, the Wi-Fi was poor, so operating a GPS was challenging! My daily adventures using a map in Greek was a real treat and a test of my skills.
