Languages spoken: English, Hawaiian
Reasons to go: Nicknamed “The Garden Island,” Kauai is the oldest and the fourth largest of the main Hawaiian islands. Kapaa is a quaint town on the island, and the best place to sit overlooking the main street is up at the Olympic Cafe. The Blackened Ono and the Ahi sandwiches are so yummy – not to mention the Mai Tais and the Lava Flow! There is also delicious pizza to be had at Pizzaetta in Old Koloa Town, very nice after a stroll through this historic little town.
There are many activities to keep you busy on Kauai, including a tube ride down an old sugar plantation irrigation system in Lihue, and there are some sights you just don't want to miss. You should check out Kilauea Point Lighthouse and wildlife refuge, Hanalei Valley Lookout, and Hanalei Pier. Visit breathtaking Waimea Canyon State Park, which is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. If you want to see amazing falls, take a hike to Opaekaa Falls in Wailua. I also highly recommend a raft trip along the Na Pali coastline.
Kauai is my favorite of the Hawaiian Islands due to the laid-back living, friendly locals, relaxation, and beautiful scenery. Kauai truely is a piece of paradise.
