Reasons to go to Matera, Italy
I visited Matera, Italy in October, 2014. It was my first trip to Italy and I chose some “off the beaten track” destinations.
I found Matera incredibly beautiful, scenic, and non-touristy.
The people were extremely friendly and even though there was a language barrier (to be honest, my knowledge of the Italian language was nonexistent), I found them very helpful.
I stayed in Torretta ai Sassi after reading some amazing reviews about the place. Even though they humbly call themselves a “room & breakfast,” I can honestly say it was one of the best places I have ever stayed. Each room has a different view, a lovely theme, and is immaculately clean. Each morning there is a sumptuous breakfast lovingly prepared by the wife of the owner himself.
I also enjoyed a fantastic meal at Trattoria del Caveoso, which I would highly recommend. The other days my meals were basically gelatos from Gelida Voglia. The flavors were amazing, and the service was good.
Just walking around Matera is a lovely experience but among the few places worth visiting, was the Madonna delle Virtu' e San Nicola Dei Greci.
Another place a bit away from Matera but definitely worth it is the La Cripta Del Peccato Originale.
