Solo travel rating: 2 (1 is easiest, 4 is most difficult. Please see chart below)
Languages spoken: Indonesian, English
Reasons to go: Mt. Bromo, an active volcano in Indonesia, is actually one of the many beautiful destinations that I covered in my 2-week backpacking trip there recently. It is about 6 hours by train from Yogyakarta, and you will pass Surabaya before reaching the town called Probolinggo. From Probolinggo, you need to take a taxi to your chosen accommodation for the night before the hike early the next morning. I chose Yoshi Hotel, about a 1-hour drive from the Probolinggo train station. It is a comfortable place for backpackers and many tourists stay in this hotel to see more of what Mt. Bromo can offer.
The hotel will arrange for your transportation the next morning and the jeep will pick you up at around 2:30am to head to Mount Penajakan to see the beautiful sunrise. From there you can also see Mt. Bromo underneath. The jeep will then take you to Mt. Bromo for the hike. The hike is relatively easy except for the ashes which make it more difficult – like walking on the beach. Be prepared to get covered in ashes from head to toe!
The view from the top of Mt. Bromo is breathtaking. I highly recommend it for adventurous solo travelers.
