Reasons to go: Argentina is a rich country. It is rich in history, culture, beauty, wildlife and interesting people. Anyone who has read Bruce Chatwin’s ‘In Patagonia’ can tell you of its, at times, quixotic and complex history, as well as the interesting characters you can find there.
Puerto Madryn is full of colourful locals and a spectacular array of wildlife. As a preliminary activity before seeing the real thing you can visit the Museo Provincial del Hombre y el Mar which has excellent natural history exhibits. The ones on orcas are especially good. You can also visit the EcoCentro which will give you information on the local sea life. It’s best to call them beforehand as their opening times can be unpredictable. June to mid-December is whale-watching season. There are many tours available out of Puerto Madryn to the Reserva Faunística Península Valdés.
If you want to experience the desolate beauty of the Patagonian desert then head down to Trelew. A sheep statue greets you as you enter the town, which should give you a clue about its origins. It began as a Welsh settlement. The Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio is worth a look for its paleontological insights. Then head west. Buses are frequent, well organised and comfortable. Plataforma10 is a good website for organising the trip across to The Andes.
