Languages spoken: Lugandan, Swahili, English
Reasons to go: Compared to its popular neighbours, Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda is an untouched gem. Because of Uganda's turbulent past, tourism in Uganda is very underdeveloped, meaning that everything costs less, and it is easier to connect with people without being seen as an object of financial exploitation.
Kampala is the capital city of Uganda and also one of the least inspiring places in the country. Once you leave the capital, you are blessed with beautiful greenery and the opportunity to go on safari at a fraction of the price of typical East African countries. Jinja, the source of the Nile, offers some of the best white water rafting experiences in the world as well as the opportunity to bungee jump above one of the world's most famous rivers.
If you want to give something back to a country with a difficult history, there are countless volunteer projects in Uganda that are more than willing to take on volunteers. Transport around the country is cheap and easily available although the roads are awful and you might have to share your seat with one or two other people. The people are friendly and laid back and outside of the big cities, crime is not a large problem.
It is only a matter of time before Uganda becomes developed as tourism is increasing year upon year. At the moment, it is still a wonderful place to visit and for someone from a very different part of the world, it feels like being on another planet.
