Amaru Hostal
The hostel is more of a guesthouse and the building and room were very nice. The staff was really sweet, caring and helpful. I was greeted with coca herbal tea as soon as I arrived to help me adjust to the altitude. The location is great. I had no trouble finding it. It's really close to the city center, has a great patio, the breakfast is good and complete. Even though I was there during winter (mid-to-late July), having breakfast outside was most pleasant!

Bright Hostel
The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were spacious. It was a nice place to relax before and after the hike to Machu PIcchu. The Internet worked well enough and they had coffee and tea available. The location was also pretty central. Only downfall is sometimes the water pressure was low or not so hot. If you're looking for a party this probably isn't the place but they do have a common area indoors and outdoors and we made some nice friends there.

Los Ninos Hotel
The rooms are simple and spotless. The food is wonderful with a touch of Peruvian but with a home-cooked European flare. The people who work there are friendly, accommodating, and very helpful. The rooms are situated around a courtyard, making for a very peaceful place to relax. The owner started a foundation for Peruvian children and proceeds go to help these children. (More on their website). I stayed here twice while in Cusco.

Bothy Backpacker Hostel
Bothy was a nice place to acclimate to the altitude as well as take some tours of Lake Titicaca. It’s a comfortable hostel with good-sized rooms as well as warm blankets. It's about 3 blocks or so, a short walk, to the main square of town and the hostel has a great rooftop common area where you can watch movies and see some views of the city. All in all it was a nice stay for the money. They also provide breakfast, and tea whenever you'd like it.
