Udaipur is a city that didn't match my expectations in a most positive way.
When I think of my trip to India last year, I think first about Udaipur.
Yes, I saw the Taj Mahal. And yes, I went to an ashram in Rishikesh. I went to an Indian wedding and visited many fascinating small towns but nothing matches Udaipur in my memory.
Known as the Venice of India, Udaipur sits on Lake Pichola. Lined with ghatts, accommodating to tourists but not overrun by us, this is the place in India that I most enjoyed.
